The freshly removed 727. In excellent shape from the outside, worked perfectly when removed and only receiving some upgrades while the Hemi is being worked on (otherwise I wouldn't have touched it). Can't wait to add a RMVB, bold in sprag, and other upgrades!

From the front showing the oil pump housing. A neat tid bit, if Chuck Mann has worked on it, the pump housing is black.

/images/656225/TCS_10_inch_Torque_Converter.jpeg
The custom spec 10" TCS torque converter. The engine builder and TCS worked together to perfectly match and select the right stall speed for my drivetrain. Stall speed is 2,400rpm - 2,600rpm. I'll be re-using this as it's in as new condition still and worked fantastically. Launched and hooked hard on the street and had great cruising lock up speed / rpm.

/images/656225/727_Inner_Race_Contact_with_Case.jpeg
Chuck Mann said the tranmission and parts were all in excellent condition "everything is like fucken new mate" in his words but there was one issue of concern that he spotted when tearing it down... The inner race from the sprag had come into contact with rear of the transmission housing causing a decent "groove".
-
/images/656225/Inner_Race_Contact_Hitting_Casing_Torqueflite_727_transmission_housing_groove.jpeg
A clear, close up shot showing the noticeable groove. Not bad bad, but definitely something that needed to be addressed. Glad I ordered a new bolt in, 6 bolt sprag, otherwise we would have never removed the old one (no real need) so stripping it back to the casing was worth it! While this contact isn't super rare, it does pop up often enough with the 727s. About their only little issue. The inner race is pressed on to the rear drum which is free to float back or forward on the rear support, some make contact, some don't.

Thankfully! Sonnax out of the U.S.A, make a kit specifically for this problem. Sonnax part # 22556-BRG

/images/656225/Sonnax_Kit_22556-BRG.jpeg
The actual case repair bearings. You only need 1 but it comes with 3 for some reason. Clear instructions and a machine shop are needed to install this. Once installed, it will prevent it from happening again, levels it out back to normal and eliminates excessive endplay. Between that and the new bolt in 6 bolt A&A sprag I ordered, this will never happen again and will be solid as fuck! Overkill (6 bolt sprag) for the street possibly, but better safe than sorry.

The first of many new upgrade parts, the A&A Transmissions "Ultimate Sprag". It's an extreme heavy duty, bolt-in, 6 bolt sprag with 16 rollers offering far superior strength and reliability. Factory configuration is 4 which for my 660hp would be ample, 6 bolt is more race spec, massive hp cars (1,500hp and up) so probably overkill, but again, no harm in having this piece in there, that's for sure!

/images/656225/A_A_727_Bolt_in_Sprag_6_Bolt.jpeg
Obviously the unit comes ready to install with springs, roller assembly, inner race and hardware.

/images/656225/TF727_bolt_in_6_bolt_sprag_transmission.jpeg
The "Ultimate Sprag" 6-bolt in version from A&A Transmissions is Part # K22961US-6. Please check their catalog (yes, hey are oldschool lol) to verify the exact version you need for your application. They have a few version, early, late (with cable) and standard shift for both 727, 904s and 518s etc. My part was described as being for 727s from 1966-89 and is their main seller.
-
/images/656225/Torqueflite_727_bolt_in_sprag.jpeg
The 6 mounting holes of the Ultimate Sprag. The stock OEM factory unit has 4 holes so the builder is required to drill out 2 extra holes to install this piece.
-
/images/656225/A_A_Trans_Ultimate_sprag_727_Installation_Tool.jpeg
To help install the A&A Ultimate Sprag correctly, A&A offer a "professional installation tool", part # AAT9250USP. It comes with hardened drill bits, template locator and template securing bolts. Very cool. There is an "economy install tool" which is similar but instead of being on there when you drill like the pro version, you use a hole punch and remove it to drill. The Economy is $75 USD, the pro version is $150.00. I never skimp and want it perfect and to make life easier for the builder so the pro version was the only option for me!

/images/656225/Cope_Racing_727_Reverse_Manual_Valve_Body_Race_1.jpeg
Along with the 6-bolt, 16 roller Ultimate sprag, the next biggest upgrade to the Torqueflite 727 was the Cope Racing Transmissions (CRT) "Pro Race" Reverse Manual Valve Body. Part # CRT-22X.
-
/images/656225/Cope_Racing_727_Reverse_Manual_Valve_Body_Race_CRT-22X.jpeg
The CRT-22X Reverse manual valve body has around 155-180psi and has low band apply which gives extra sprag protection and enables engine braking in 1st gear. All built in house in the U.S.A, the Separator plate is water jet cut, and the valve body half’s are machined on their CNC mills. John Cope himself builds them individually to make sure quality control is top notch and the finished product is the highest quality.

I love these kinds of parts, especially ones that create a big difference in driving. Sometimes it's a shame to hide parts like this away!

-
/images/656225/Cope_Racing_727_Reverse_Manual_Valve_Body_Race_3.jpeg
The CRT-22X "Pro Race" valve body offers very firm clean shifts and with high pressure and high flow, including 3rd gear which in some cases can result in firmer shifts than 2nd gear. Using this valve body, you must manually shift each and every time, just without the clutch. Simple. Fun. Fast. Consistent. FYI: Running this valve body requires a low / reverse billet servo.

TCS Billet steel front planetary assembly. This piece adds strength and reliability with a vastly stronger steel spline, (made by TCS) instead of aluminium like in the stock unit which with high HP cars can shred the aluminium spline resulting in foreign debris going through the trans and ultimately making you shit yourself when you see metal flakes in your fucken oil pan!

These billet, 2nd gear dual ring servo pistons are designed to eliminate the leakage of fluid past the ring area and servo cover. These servo pistons will ensure a more positive shift to 2nd gear and a firmer 3rd gear shift. Matched to manual race valve body, these shifts are going to be fucken instant and neck breakingly crisp!! lol

/images/656225/727_HD_Band_Strut.jpeg
This solid HD piece of billet steel is an Andrews Racing Transmissions 727 HD band strut which will not bend with increased line pressure being run using a racing valve body. This is where the car game gets expensive, granted this piece isn't expensive but the same principle applies. "Oh, cool! I'll buy a manual valve body!" That's pricey enough for most people, then on top of that you need all the other parts to run along side it so shit don't break! lol. Same in any brand, new turbo, new engine, stiffening, fuel upgrades, suspension, traction...FFS!! We must REALLY love our car hobby huh!!

An A&A Transmissions 727 master gasket kit. I just handed this kit over to Chuck Mann to use what he needs. Always good to replace gaskets, regardless of age. If you've opened something up, rule of thumb, use new gaskets to close it up!

/images/656225/RVMB_Torqueflite_727_Pistol_Grip_shifter_Gear_Display.jpeg
While waiting for the transmission to be built and although I have a custom gear shift indicator in the dash, as the shift pattern would be in REVERSE, I didn't want to fuck up a shift by going down a gear while at 5,500rpm lol. A used my label machine to print white letters on a black 7mm adhesive decal and then used permanent coloured sharpie pens to make it look more professional. Came up great! I was only going to have it in place until I'd gotten 100% used to the reverse shift pattern but I'll probably keep it in there, it looks slick. Even after a few seconds, zero colour transfer or rubbing off (being permanent markers).
