The Right Hand Drive Conversion

When the Night Runner arrived at Mainfreight in Petone I went down immediately to view and inspect the truck. I was anxious to see it in person. I had never seen one in person and really wanted to see just how big they were. They are 5.17 metres long, 1.9 metres high and just over 2 metres wide but they don't look BIG. They're a "nice" big, not a big dinosaur, what I call chunky or a "mean" big. I also went down to pick up some parts that shipped on the same shipment, some for my other cars and a few pieces were to go with the truck up to the RHD conversion shop. These were; Viper master slave & cylinder clutch upgrade kit and X-Metal Gen-X short shifter + gasket. I was only there for 10 minutes at most. They had a snobby MAF lady who wouldn't allow private customers into her inspection "zone" for fear of tampering (ie: drugs removal, etc), fair enough I guess but she could have been more professional about it.

After collecting the parts and putting them inside the cabin for the RHD conversion, I was informed that the truck's battery was flat, drained due to the heat in the container whilst in transit. The next day I popped back down with a replacement battery, installed it and upon opening the hood discovered a decent gouge in the A/C condenser. Very strange as the hood would have had to have been open for the damage to occur, yet the hood and front end were mint - no damage. I didn't claim on insurance, the replacement A/C condenser came to $100 over excess, not worth it. I didn't have enough time to fully check the Ram for dents or imperfections due to time and the fact is was covered in dust. The SRT/10 had to wait in Mainfreights holding zone until the RHD Conversion shop could fit the truck in. I booked early October 2007 but due to the LA wharf hold up they started other projects which threw everything out of line.

After several weeks my truck was finally transported up to Eagle Automotive on the 20th of February, 2008. They stored the truck in their storage facilities until they had completed their other jobs. This took a further 2 months and by the 21st of April, work finally began. Eagle immediately discovered slight damage on their pre-conversion inspection check list. 1 mag wheel had kurbage and a hole in the Scorpion tyres. A new tyre was needed and they asked if I wanted the wheel repaired and painted to match, to which I agreed. I ordered a new Pirelli Scorpion tyre from Tony's Tyre service in Wanganui and had them courier it to Eagle and send me the invoice. Eagle Automotive found a few more items when they washed the SRT/10 down. Several small surface dents on the hood and front fenders. I asked to have them fixed along with any other imperfections. I wanted this Dodge Ram SRT/10 to arrive at my door step, brand new, ready to drive with nothing needing to be done.

While the truck was at Mainfreight awaiting Eagle's schedule to ease, I sourced a brand new original OEM KPH speedometer from a Canadian Chrysler dealer. Not a necessary modification but a nice touch and rare to see in these trucks. I also sourced an OEM replacement A/C condenser from the USA. I had both items sent directly to me so I could inspect them first, then I re-packed and couriered them up to Eagle Automotive. Eagle Automotive were excellent, as you will see from the photos, very thorough and professional. Melissa (in the office) was awesome. She emailed every Monday with an update and was quick to answer any questions I had. I asked for photos with my updates and she obliged sending 3 or 4 nice shots a week. All the photos of the RHD conversion are hers. I sent the clear title and other import notices and the truck was fully certified, VINed, NZ plates installed + registered, WOF and at my house 6 weeks after work began. It was a long wait, not helped by an unfortunate delay in LA, these things happen and all I can say is the wait was well worth it!
